The Kinunir - Part 1

The Skylark’s crew has a mishap while refueling and begins to solve the mystery of an Imperial Navy warship that was lost two decades ago.

This note is from our March 5, 2017 session and was mostly written by Carl and Kay with additional material provided by myself.

We used the Roll20 online virtual tabletop to connect with each other since we are now scattered around the country.

Continued from: Back to Rhylanor.

Date: 263-1106 Imperial.

Location: On Rhylanor in the Rhylanor Subsector.

Over the last few months we did the R&R / trade / take classes thing and Medicus had put his arm in good order once more. We talked things over, and absent any news or message from Oberlindes we decided to head back to Shionthy and Keng in the Regina Subsector to pursue the plague issue and the possibility of checking out an rumored Ancient site in Shionthy.

Of course it is a red-zone system containing anti-matter, but we planned to go to Socrates Station in the Shionthy belt for the plague issues, and avoid the dangerous stuff in the inner belt.

2118
Launched from Rhylanor.

2215
We get a call from the Banks Orbital Habitat “Please observe posted speed limits until you clear the congested area.” Accelerating at 3G, it doesn’t take long for the Skylark to build up a lot of speed. In our haste to be on our way, we forgot about how highly controlled space is around Rhylanor. We cut our acceleration but still made our scheduled jump at midnight.

271-1106 0040
7 Days later, we arrived in the Tureded system.

We got into orbit at 0333 and were on the ground in our berth at the local C-Class port about 0830.

278-1106
With cargo loaded around 1700, we were ready to head out and launched at 2100 and made our jump out for Macene at 0000 on 279-1106.

285-1106
Late 'night' arrival into Macene system at 2221. Macene’s small size meant that we didn’t take long to cross the 100-planetary diameter and we were docked before midnight.

296-1106
We jumped out for the Inthe system ten days later with a full load of cargo.

302-1106 2342
Arrived in the Inthe system in the Regina Subsector.

303-1106 0335
In Inthe orbit and settled at the B-class starport at 0415.

308-1106
Departed Inthe for Rethe at 2100, after being on world for 6 days.

309-1106 0000
Jump to Rethe.

316-1106 0525
Out of jump into the Rethe system. It took 12 hours or so to get to the gas giant and started refueling at about 1712.

At the gas giant, rookie refueler Fig gave it a shot. First pass was not all it could have been. Buffeting in the gas giant’s atmosphere caused damage to the front cargo bay door seals and we lost pressure in the cargo bay. Fortunately, all of the cargo containers we were carrying were sealed.

Leon suited up and went down to the cargo bay while Kipenzi got the ship back to stable. She and Medicus talked with Fig about refueling while Leon checked out the pressure issue.

After a few tries, Fig passed the helm to Kipenzi, and watched to try and learn from watching.

This was a tough day, and even Kipenzi couldn't nail it. Still no fuel and another try yet to come. Another not-so-good recovery.

The good old Skylark flashed us red lights indicating problems with the starboard turret, accompanied by some grinding sounds.

Medicus took the helm and recovered the ship into a stable configuration. The turret was not holding pressure, so we ALL suited up for the work, just in case.

Leon checked it out from the inside, and the turret was still in place. Inside did not look bad, but some warning lights. Looks like we lost one of the lasers.

Opening the hatch he saw that one of the lasers was GONE. One laser and the sandcaster were still there.

“THE MOST EXPENSIVE REFUELING EVER !”

Leon was not able to get the remaining gun back online.

We discussed a jump directly to Paya for repairs, using our remaining fuel. Luckily we had made a 1-jump and had enough to jump out to the A-class port in Paya for repairs.

Checking to be sure we have enough fuel to jump and get into the station, we decided that our best move was to discontinue refueling attempts and jump.

Even Medicus has been known to be less than sterling and we had gotten into a position of not wanting to risk another burble.

The starport at Paya is full service and would be able to fix us up.

317-1106 2230
Ready to jump for Paya. We all suit up because the turret is not holding a seal and we only have one iris valve between the turret and our common area.

324-1106
Into Paya. Docked at Paya High Port at 2230.

At the port we got some mail from Claude Withers, the retired scout who runs the Keng starport:

An agent for an "artifact collector", Lynne Lakershi asked about a data pad from the Annic Nova.

We didn't mention it to anyone, and the one we had found self-destructed when we tried to open it.

Someone must have gone onto Annic Nova and seen the missing datapad, or the debris. A week later the ship is destroyed by missile fire.

We sent Claude a message including that we never had a data pad from the Annic, just some books and such, and the possibility of salvage. Another possible person looking for us, or even an agency after us... oh wow!

Repairs on Paya were 1,010,000 credits and took one day. Ship was back in good working order, refueling in process.

Medicus has gotten more handy with his new arm and showed off his improved dexterity.

We woke up Calvin Matheson and Darryl Basset, our two low passengers for Rethe. They were surprised to be in the Paya system. We don't charge them for the trip to Paya, and pay their way to Rethe.

Darryl was on leave and is late reporting for Scout Service, so we provide a letter of explanation to his officer.

332-1106
Jumped out of Paya for Moughas at 0000.

338-1106 2225
Into the Moughas system.

Rumors and information that we ran into, about Shionthy

...on closer examination of the system reveals some features that do not quite jibe with the official library data.
The Shionthy Belt, from which the system is named, is the outer of two belts. The inner belt, called the Ragnarok Belt, which occupies the life zone around Shionthy's star, is the one that is riddled with contra-terrene matter.
Occasional CTM encounters do take place elsewhere in the system, including in the Shionthy Belt, but nowhere near often enough to make life there especially hazardous, as evidenced by the fact that 70 million people live and thrive there.

347-1106 0000
Jump out for Shionthy. Fig and Sam also plotted an emergency jump back to Moughas in case we had a problem on entry.

As usual, we planned to be suited up and evacuated for arrival, but came out of hyper way early.

Five days instead of seven (ship time), and we were not where we planned to be. Our clocks were 15 hours, 38 minutes and 15.9 seconds off, possibility due to a small mis-jump.... We emerged well outside of our planned arrival, outside of the Cold (Shionthy) Belt.

356-1106 1445
In Shionthy system.

Sam and Fig spent some time checking the astrogation, and found NO reason for this "event". “WORST TRIP EVER !”

Kipenzi found a big rock on sensors, and maybe that was the factor. It could have precipitated us out of hyperspace when we passed within 100 diameters of it. We charted it for addition to the interstellar database. Bad enough that we got zapped, let's help the next people to come along.

Kipenzi picked up a weak distress signal, apparently from the Imperial Navy. She got a good fix on it, about 3 hours away. We suited up and headed for it. It is in the Shionthy belt, so anti-matter is unlikely (but possible) .

We planned to be able to coast by them, but also be able to stop, and try to contact on all frequencies possible. We also sent out messages about the distressed ship and its probable location to any ship or station in system.

The ship appeared to be in orbital lock around a huge asteroid, and no other ships on sensors, but some unidentified returns were spotted. The ship itself was a 1200 tonner, maybe Kinunir class. There was no transponder broadcasting.

If it was Knunir class there would be about 70 crew and decent weaponry.

We detected an organic return and checked it out. Amplified sensors showed 4 returns about size of people in VACC suits. We coasted by and it was four people, but no suits. They had been there a while, frozen solid and pockmarked by micrometeorites.

We put a beacon on the asteroid, figuring that everything was in orbital lock, and sent out messages that the ship appears to be inert and not immediate distress for crew.

No life signs, battle damage to the ship. Was this done by the 400 tonner that shot up the Annic Nova?

Keeping good sensor discipline, we didn't see anything else.

The ship was pretty inert, with damage from both missiles and lasers. There was some evidence of combat repairs having been done, but no life signs or response to our signals. Minimal electrical activity.

The default away team of Kipenzi, Leon and Fig, geared up for a visit.

The team saw several cargo hatches, a very large iris valve with a shattered glass dome covering it, and other iris valves and panels around the ship.

We loaded up with tools, weapons, medic bag, cameras, comm, ballistic cloth armor, etc.

Leon tried to get us access to the ship through the iris valve under the shattered dome, but it was a warship and ease of access is not a design consideration. We looked for emergency rescue access. Checking out the underside, we found a missing hatch.

It looked like it had been shot away.

Inside the hatch we found a ship name panel: INS Kinunir CC-9514. This was the Kinunir, not just a Kinunir class.

Medicus and Sam check the databases for Kinunir and this specific one. The Kinunir disappeared on 063-1088. It was on its maiden voyage. 18 years here, possibly.

We can confirm that yes, there was a pirate base in Keng.

Checking the panels for electricity flow, Leon detected some. Panels may (or may not) work. He opened the first cargo door we came to, but it only opened a little bit, enough to see a ramp, perhaps for loading from ground.

Moving on to hatches above ladders, Kipenzi floated up and opened one. Dark room with jump drives. Good sign of power plant proximity. They are shut down but appear in good shape. Maneuver drive also shut down but looking OK.

Hatches are both floor and ceiling access, drives appear to be multi level. Looking for power plant we didn't find anything on that level.

We kept on looking around on that level, found more doors and a lift. As we kept meandering about, crates and assorted things floating loose (ship shook when hit, most likely) Spare parts and such on this level.

Found an electronics shop, mostly stuff needing repairs.

Up one level, looking for power, we found a particle accelerator instead. We continued up the ladder, and found more maneuver and jump drive areas.

Found dining and recreation areas instead, and more drive areas. Big ship, needed a lotta push. Back down to check more of the level there.

Finally found the power plant.

Kipenzi and Leon and Fig - Klueless in Kinunir. Sigh...

At least we could try to get the power up and going a little, or hopefully a lot. Kipenzi tried but the fuel tanks were completely dry, so we would have to pump some from the Skylark to get power on this ship.

We continued roaming around, looking for the edges and what was next to the power/drives. Fuel tanks should be around them but we needed to confirm.

Ship's boat dock area but no boat. Was there ever one? Could have been an escape. We had seen blood stains in various places but no bodies on board.

We continued moving around the level(s) and found more of the same/similar to before. Some areas look like they were left in a hurry, as in a battle stations alert.

Moving forward, hoping for medbay or bridge, we found more recreation areas. We decided to go up another level and continue searching.

Crew cabins, definitely Navy. We kept on looking around the levels. Gotta be a medbay or bridge here someplace.

We found an air/raft area with two present. An officer's mess with space for relics and trophies.

Next was the CIC (Combat Information Center) Nothing working here either. Finally found the bridge, but still no bodies anywhere. We found that the computer was running, so some emergency power must have been still going.

Leon tried to get us a ship's display somehow, so we could know ship damage status, for possible refueling.

After all three of the team failed to figure out the computer interface, it just came up on its own. At least none of the three thought they had effectively done anything.

We tried to access ship information. Found a deck plan for the ship. Found some other information but could not retrieve the ship’s log. The deck plan told us where the medical area could be found.

Captain's cabin was a definite check out, and logs from the medical bay.

Captain's cabin had a ship's safe but no logs that we could find. No indication of what happened here, or even when. On to the medbay.

The sick bay had 8 beds and good equipment, some blood but no bodies. Whatever casualties there were had been evacuated. Medical officer's log was there. Looks like they were fighting pirates in Keng.

Heavy casualties, they evacuated in Keng. So, firstly - HOW did the ship get here? Secondly - the crew must have all died, since no one ever reported anything.

A chair we had seen earlier but not identified now seems to be a shield management area. Perhaps this was a Black Globe Generator. Ancient tech, possibly. Likely best to NOT mess with it.

Sam and Medicus were recovering the four bodies that we had found earlier while the Away Team was checking out the ship. Who they were would tell us a more. If crew, that could be how the ship got to Shionthy, or perhaps even if pirates.

We discussed refueling the ship and taking it into Socrates Station ourselves, or marking it and going to report. Pros and cons both ways. We need to make a decision about what to do with the ship and any goodies on board.
